Our sister site DaytimeTV.net recently interviewed "All My Children" star James Scott. James is currently training to run the New York Triathlon on July 10th. We asked James for some tips on how to get started on a healthy lifestyle.

"I think is that most people know how to get started. Most of them know what’s good for them and what’s bad for them. Nobody has to be told that fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole-grain products are good for you. Most people know that’s what you eat, and you should be eating a lot of that. Most people know that exercise is good, and they should be getting more of that. I think a lot of people look towards programs to try and get some structure in what they’re doing, but when people have really made that choice in their minds that they’re really going to commit to a diet…they want to make a lifestyle choice…I think they’ll just do it."

"Getting started with exercise can be as simple as taking an hour’s walk, or it could just be a half-hour’s or twenty minutes, whatever, just slowly increasing. Just look at how active you are, and be honest with yourself. Most people may [in] their working day, get up, get in the car, drive to work, get in the elevator, sit at their desk, and then do the same thing in reverse to get home. They don’t burn a tremendous amount of calories."

We've changed our lifestyle and started exercising, what about nutrition?  James sticks to an organic diet. "There’s a general kind of school of thought that says that conventionally grown vegetables and fruits…fruits and vegetables that are grown with pesticides and fertilizers on some soil that is very much leeched of nutrients because it’s overused…can have three to five times less nutrients than organic fruits and vegetables. When you have things like orange juice, which you think is good for you, you have pasteurized or flash pasteurized, meaning it’s been heated first to a couple hundred degrees. All the nutrients are killed, so you’re getting very little benefit from it. In an official organic diet, you can still have a burger, but the meat is organic, where you’re not getting any antibiotics or any hormones. You’re getting a richer source of protein. It’s much better for you, and your body will be able to digest it much more easily. If you’re a having the burger and have lettuce and tomatoes on it, the vegetables in that are going to have much higher levels of the nutrients that you need than you would get otherwise. If nothing else, if you can switch to the organic without making massive changes in your diet, it will be good for you because it’s healthy. It will give your body more of the nutrients it needs."

"I think one of the reasons people get sick today is because of all the toxins that we bring into our body from what we choose to eat. I think it makes the body very weak and prone to a lot of things. It makes our immune system weak…and it makes our body very toxic."

Organic living doesn’t only pertain to diet. "I’ve been reading all these books about all the horrible chemicals we put into our body…not just through what we eat, but through moisturizers, face creams, and suntan lotions. You know, your skin is the biggest organ in your body, and you spread all these incredible toxins all over it to make your skin smooth, not wrinkly, and all of these kinds of things and, in fact, I’ve been shopping around, and I’ve managed to find organic moisturizers. I’ve put a rose hip oil on my face… and it’s made my skin look fantastic."

And we think you look fantastic too, James.
